Ranchi Municipal Corporation Implements Strict Penalties for Open Dumping Ahead of Festive Season

Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has announced a stricter initiative to curb open dumping and ensure robust cleanliness during the upcoming festive season.Shop owners, hotels, and restaurants found dumping garbage in the open will now face a penalty of up to Rs 5,000, from September 15.Repeated violations will lead to cancellation of trade licences and sealing of establishments. All commercial entities have also been directed to maintain separate bins for wet and dry waste at source. The decision was taken on Wednesday during a review meeting chaired by RMC administrator Sushant Gaurav, along with senior officials, zonal supervisors, sanitation staff, and representatives of the agency handling solid waste management. The review focused on ensuring a clean and safe city environment during Durga Puja to Chhath when large gatherings are expected.Gaurav said, “Citizen complaints must be resolved on priority and no lapses in sanitation will be tolerated. Supervisors will be evaluated based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), with rewards for efficient work and strict action against negligence.”Special campaigns will also be launched for micro-level monitoring of pandal areas, including drain cleaning, bleaching powder spraying, streetlight repair, fogging drives, and dog-catching operations.

Ahead of Chhath, all ponds will undergo special cleaning with dedicated machinery.“RMC is committed to providing citizens with clean and safe facilities, especially during festivals when lakhs of people gather in public places. Our teams will work with renewed focus to ensure a hygienic and festive Ranchi,” he added. However, some residents remain sceptical. Ramesh Kumar, a shopkeeper near Main Road, said, “Penalties are fine, but unless the corporation ensures regular garbage collection, the problem will continue.”Rina Murmu, a resident of Kokar said, "RMC always carries out such campaigns through words than action.”Pinky Sharma, a resident of Peace Road, said, "Our locality has been neglected throughout the year. Hope, RMC pays attention to the inner lanes of the city as well.”
