Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says he is ready to go to jail after Asaduddin Owaisi filed a case over the controversial 'point blank' video.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said he was “ready to go to jail" after Asaduddin Owaisi filed a case against him over a now-deleted video that had sparked nationwide controversy.
Speaking to reporters in Dibrugarh, Sarma said he had no knowledge of the video in question but stood firmly by his political position. “I am ready to go to jail. What can I do? I do not know anything about any video. If he has filed a case against me, arrest me; what objection do I have? I have no objection. But I stand by my words. I am against Bangladeshi infiltrators, and I will continue to be against them," the chief minister said.

The remarks come amid mounting legal and political pressure following the circulation of a video later deleted that showed imagery allegedly targeting Muslims, which drew sharp criticism from Opposition parties and civil rights groups.
Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court of India flagging Sarma’s past remarks on so-called “Miya Muslims". Petitioners argued that the Assam chief minister has made similar divisive comments on multiple occasions, including references such as “flood jihad".
The plea also alleged that Sarma had previously made statements suggesting that people from a particular religious community should be removed from electoral rolls. According to the petitioners, such remarks are not isolated and reflect a broader pattern, with ministers and senior officials in other states also making comparable statements.
Terming the trend dangerous for constitutional values, the petitioners have urged the Supreme Court to frame guidelines to regulate public comments made by holders of constitutional offices, arguing that unchecked rhetoric risks deepening social divisions and undermining democratic institutions.
The matter is expected to come up for consideration before the apex court in the coming days.
