A motorcycle race among three minor boys turned fatal in Lucknow on Sunday morning when one of them died following collision with a scooter. The incident unfolded at 7:30am near the Janeshwar Mishra Park when 17-year-old Naetik Kumar, a student of Class 12, collided with another two-wheeler and crashed into the divider, suffering fatal injuries to his head.

Naetik, a resident of Vishesh Khand in Gomti Nagar Extension, had left home early in the morning for a motorcycle ride with two of his friends — Aditya Srivastava and Krishna Singh. All three teenagers were riding separate motorcycles and were reportedly racing each other on the stretch of road near Gate No 5 of the park.

During the race, Naetik, who was riding a Royal Enfield Bullet, suddenly encountered a scooter in front of him. Before he could react, his bike rammed into the scooter. The impact caused the motorcycle to lose balance and crash into the road divider. Naetik was thrown off the bike and hit the divider head-on, sustaining severe injuries to his head.

Aditya, who was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle behind Naetik, also lost control and fell on the road, while Krishna Singh, riding another bike, also crashed during the incident. Passers-by and locals rushed to the spot after hearing the loud crash and helped the injured teenagers.

With the help of bystanders, Aditya took Naetik to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared the 17-year-old dead during treatment. The other two teenagers suffered minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital after receiving first aid.

The deceased has been identified as the son of Ram Iqbal, an engineer in the electricity department. The family resides in the Vishesh Khand locality of Gomti Nagar Extension.

Aditya later uploaded a video on social media that showed Naetik inside the ambulance. He posted the video on social media with the message: “Ek pal mein sab khatam ho gaya (Everything ended in a moment)". The post has since gone viral, drawing condolences as well as condemnation of the reckless behaviour of the minors.

Police said they informed Naetik’s family about the accident soon after the incident. However, the grieving family refused to allow a post-mortem examination of the body. They later took the body to their ancestral village in Barabanki for the last rites.

Station House Officer Sudhir Awasthi of Gomti Nagar Extension police station said that CCTV footage from cameras installed in the area is being examined to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the accident. “We are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations to establish how the accident occurred," he said.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the issue of reckless driving and bike racing on Lucknow’s wide roads, particularly in the Gomti Nagar Extension area. Residents say that stunt riding and racing by youngsters are common on the stretch near Janeshwar Mishra Park, especially during early morning hours.

The accident also revived memories of another tragic incident on the same road.

On November 21, 2023, Namish, the nine-year-old son of Additional Superintendent of Police Shweta Srivastava, died after being hit by a speeding car while practising skating with his coach on the G-20 Road nearby. The child was reportedly thrown nearly 15 feet into the air after the collision and succumbed to severe injuries.

Despite repeated police claims of conducting checking drives and traffic enforcement campaigns in the area, locals say dangerous stunts and racing continue on the roads around Gomti Nagar Extension.
