Chelsea captain Reece James has committed his long-term future to the Blues after signing a new six-year contract — declaring that the club still has “everything it takes" to compete for major honours.
A product of Chelsea’s famed academy system, James joined the club at the age of six and has grown into one of the most important figures at Stamford Bridge. Now 26, the England international says he wants to spend what he believes will be the prime years of his career leading the Blues.
“I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes," James said in a club statement.
“I’m excited for the future under this ownership, sporting directors, coach and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years."
A leader in the dressing room
James has already built an impressive résumé in West London. In more than 200 appearances for Chelsea, including over 50 matches as captain, the right-back has helped the club secure five major trophies.
Those honours include the 2021 UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup, achievements that cemented his place among Chelsea’s modern success stories.
“On behalf of ownership and everyone connected to Chelsea, it is a proud moment for all of us to have Reece extend his contract," Chelsea’s statement read. “He is the leader of this team, both on and off the pitch."
Looking to the future
Chelsea have endured an inconsistent spell since an American consortium purchased the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
Despite winning the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup last season, the Blues have struggled to mount a serious challenge in the Premier League.
They currently sit fifth with nine matches remaining, while also facing a difficult task in the UEFA Champions League after a 5–2 first-leg defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16.
