In view of the acute drinking water crisis affecting several taluks in the Kalyana Karnataka region and parts of Vijayapura district, Congress MLA B.R. Patil has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking the immediate release of 2 tmcft of water from the Narayanpur Dam through the Indi Branch Canal.

Addressing a press conference in Kalaburagi on Sunday, Mr. Patil, who is also Deputy Chairman of the Karnataka State Policy and Planning Commission, said that Aland and Afzalpur taluks are reeling under severe heatwave conditions, leading to rapid depletion of groundwater, failure of borewells and growing dependence on water tankers which may not suffice as temperatures continue to rise.
