SC on Meenakshi Natarajan's plea against rejection of Rajya Sabha nomination

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday told Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan that a candidate whose nomination to contest an election is rejected can only seek remedy through the Election Commission, PTI reported. The bench asked Natarajan's counsel to cite a single instance where the Supreme Court had intervened in a case involving the rejection of a candidate's nomination papers.Appearing for Natarajan, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that the criminal case cited against her did not meet the requirements under the Representation of the People Act (RPA), as charges had not been framed. The top court was hearing Natarajan's plea challenging the Returning Officer's decision to reject her Rajya Sabha nomination papers. The nomination was rejected on the grounds that she had allegedly failed to disclose a pending criminal case. The rejection of Natarajan's nomination paved the way for the BJP to win all three Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh.
