Amid efforts to resettle people displaced by the conflict in Manipur, a firing incident took place on Tuesday night in Meitei-majority Bishnupur district, bordering Kuki-Zo majority Churachandpur district, one such area where resettlement efforts are on.

Police said no one was injured in the firing. This is the first such incident in Manipur’s “fringe area” in many months. These areas – where Meitei and Kuki-Zo settlements are in close proximity to each other – had seen sustained tensions since the conflict in May 2023. However, such incidents had died down since last November.

As part of the ongoing resettlement efforts, a total of 97 Meitei families from Bishnupur district have been resettled this month. They were also given an instalment of financial assistance from the government.
A set of families had moved into the Phougakchou Ikhai area on Monday.
“There has been movement of people earlier, which had taken place quietly. Some civil society organisation leaders had visited this area on Monday, and that might have invited attention from the other side. The firing has stopped and no injuries were reported,” said a police officer.
