A 66-year-old retired Army Havildar allegedly shot dead his son following a dispute over his relationship with a woman before dying by suicide in Punjab’s New Agar Nagar area, police said on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Surinder Singh and his 38-year-old son Gursharan Singh. Police said Surinder Singh wanted to marry a woman he had been in a relationship with after the death of his wife, but Gursharan strongly opposed the relationship.

According to neighbours, the two frequently argued over the issue. Police said another confrontation broke out on Sunday night, during which Surinder allegedly took out his licensed 12-bore double-barrel gun.

Gursharan reportedly ran out of the house to escape, but Surinder chased him onto the street and shot him dead.

After the incident, Surinder returned home and allegedly consumed poison. He was taken to the Civil Hospital, where he later died during treatment, police said.

Police have seized the weapon and sent both bodies for post-mortem examination. Gursharan was unmarried. Authorities said his two sisters, who live in England and Canada, have been informed about the incident. Surinder Singh was employed as a security guard at a bank.

Investigation into the case is underway.
