On Kargil Vijay Divas in Dharwad on Saturday, rich tributes were paid to the heroes of the Kargil war.

Members of North Karnataka Sainik Welfare Association, volunteers of NCC volunteers, Scouts and Guides and students of various schools and colleges came together to pay tributes to the martyrs.

Hubballi-Dharwad Mayor Jyoti Patil laid a wreath at the Kargil memorial located in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Dharwad.

NCC cadets, Scouts and Guides too took part in the programme and observed a two-minute silence to pay tributes to the martyrs.

As many as 533 Indian soldiers lost their lives during the Kargil war and of them, 13 were from Karnataka.

Mayor Jyoti Patil said that it is the bounden duty of every citizen to respect and remember the sacrifice of the brave soldiers. These programmes should motivate the younger generation to be ready to serve their motherland, she said.

Earlier, a Tiranga Yatra was taken out by the participants from Gandhi Chowk to the Kargil memorial in which hundreds of people from different walks of life took part carrying the tricolour, braving a spell of rain.

On the Kargil Vijay Divas, students from various schools and colleges, members of various organisations and political parties paid tributes to the martyrs by taking out rallies holding placards praising their sacrifice.

In Hubballi too, rich tributes were paid to the war heroes by various organisations and in schools and colleges.
