England handed India a loss by five wickets in the first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test in Leeds’ Headingley on Tuesday in what was a closely contested match throughout. The Test will be special for India vice-captain Rishabh Pant with the bat as the left-handed wicket-keeper batter struck centuries in both innings to keep his team in the hunt whenever he stayed in the middle.

Pant played two emphatic innings, scoring twin centuries, while putting his name in the elite list of batters to have scored tons in both innings of a Test.  In the first innings, Pant made a 209-run partnership with skipper Shubman Gill, who also scored a century. Pant scored 134, striking over 75 to bring up his seventh Test ton, fifth overseas.

He then followed up his heroics in the first innings by scoring another century in the second innings on day 4 by notching up another record when he became the player to hit the most sixes by a visiting batter in England with 9 sixes, 3 in the second innings and 6 in the first innings.

He also became only the second designated wicketkeeper in the history of the game to score hundreds in each inning,s with Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower the other who scored 142 & 199* vs South Africa in Harare in 2001.

However, his twin centuries went in vain as England chased down 371 runs in the fourth innings in just 82 overs with five wickets in hand for their second-biggest successful run chase. This meant India continued their winless streak whenever Pant had scored a ton in away matches. This was the fifth instance and sixth overseas century by Pant, which came in a losing cause.

All of his tons away from India have resulted in losses or a draw for the nation. His first Test century came back in 2018 at the Oval in London against the same opponent, where India had lost the Test by 118 runs while chasing a target of 450+.

His unbeaten 159 against Australia helped India save the game and draw the Test. But after that, his centuries in Newslands against South Africa and his 146 against England at Edgbaston both in 2022 came in a losing cause.
