The RK Nagar Assembly constituency, formally known as Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar, is one of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent urban seats. Situated in Chennai district and falling under the Chennai North Lok Sabha segment, the constituency has held political importance since its formation in 1977, often drawing attention due to high-profile leaders and fiercely contested elections.
As per the 2026 electoral rolls, the constituency has a total of 1,95,856 registered voters, including 93,576 men, 1,02,201 women, and 79 third-gender electors, reflecting a diverse and engaged electorate.
Candidates And Parties
The 2026 Assembly election in RK Nagar is shaping up to be a keenly fought, multi-cornered contest. The main rivalry is expected between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the two dominant Dravidian parties. At the same time, smaller but influential players such as Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), and actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) are also in the fray, adding further complexity to the race.
For this election, the AIADMK has once again nominated RS Rajesh, while the DMK has fielded the sitting MLA J John Ebenezer. The TVK has introduced Marie Wilson as its candidate, signalling an attempt to expand its footprint in urban constituencies. Despite these announcements, the final electoral landscape will depend heavily on alliances and last-minute political strategies.
Past Results
In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, DMK’s Ebenezer secured a decisive victory, winning more than half of the total votes cast and defeating AIADMK’s Rajesh by a margin exceeding 42,000 votes.
The constituency drew nationwide focus during the 2017 by-election, held after the passing of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in December 2016. In an unexpected outcome, TTV Dhinakaran emerged victorious as an independent candidate, outperforming nominees from both the DMK and AIADMK.
Before that, Jayalalithaa had comfortably won both the 2015 bypoll and the 2016 Assembly election from this seat, cementing its reputation as a stronghold of the AIADMK during her leadership.
Poll History
Over the decades, the seat has largely favoured the AIADMK, although the DMK has managed to secure occasional wins. The constituency’s voting patterns often mirror larger political trends in Tamil Nadu, alternating between the two Dravidian giants while occasionally delivering surprising verdicts.
The 2017 bypoll, in particular, highlighted the growing influence of individual leaders and internal party dynamics, demonstrating that voter preferences can shift beyond traditional party loyalties. Since then, the seat has evolved into a highly competitive urban battleground with significant voter participation.
Conclusion
RK Nagar continues to be one of the most closely watched constituencies in Tamil Nadu politics. Given its history of dramatic outcomes and high-profile contests, the 2026 election is likely to be another intense and closely fought battle, with no easy predictions.
