 HC issues notices to Mamata, Abhishek in contempt case

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered that notices be served to TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee and general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in a contempt plea over the alleged violation of court orders on blocking arterial roads during the Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21, 2025.A division bench headed by Justice Arijit Banerjee was approached by a petitioner alleging violation of a 2018 court order, which directed that gatherings on thoroughfares must not cause total blockage of roads. The 2018 order, passed by a division bench of the then Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya and Justice Arijit Banerjee, had mandated that a passage must be kept open on such roads for the movement of pedestrians and emergency vehicles.
