Dramatic visuals have emerged from Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the country within 39 seconds of each other on Wednesday, showing roads split apart, buildings cracked open and panicked residents scrambling to safety.

Videos circulating on social media captured deep fissures running through roads, passengers rushing out of an airport terminal as the ground shook, and water gushing out of a rooftop swimming pool atop a high-rise building in Caracas.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near San Felipe, about 284 kilometres west of Caracas, at 22:04 GMT. Just 39 seconds later, a stronger 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit near Yumare, around 293 kilometres west of the capital.

USGS described the event as an earthquake doublet, saying, “This earthquake was the second event in a doublet. This magnitude 7.5 mainshock was preceded by 39 seconds by a 7.2 foreshock."

The two quakes struck less than a minute apart, about 45 kilometres from each other and at different depths. Tremors were felt across Venezuela and neighbouring Colombia.

Speaking on state television, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said, “Some buildings have been brought down (in Caracas), houses have collapsed." He did not provide an initial estimate of casualties, saying authorities were still assessing the situation.

Residents described terrifying moments as the earthquakes shook homes and buildings. “There was a very loud crash. Things fell in the house, jugs inside the refrigerator. I’ve never experienced anything like it," said Coro Martinez, 56, from eastern Caracas.

People rushed out of homes and buildings across the capital, which was hit by a deadly earthquake in 1967. Maria Romero, an 80-year-old pensioner, said police helped her evacuate. “This earthquake was horrible, even worse than the one in 1967," she said.

Emergency crews and fire trucks were deployed across Caracas as authorities assessed the damage. “Several walls in my building broke open or cracks formed," a witness in Valencia told Reuters. “As soon as it stopped (shaking), my husband and I evacuated," the witness added.

Authorities continue to assess the damage, with aftershocks remaining a possibility in the affected region.
