The Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district—widely regarded as one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in South India—attracts hundreds of devotees and tourists daily. With offerings made mostly in banknotes, the temple administration conducts a monthly currency counting exercise to account for the donations.

Recently, all the bank notes from the Ramanathaswamy Temple and its sub-temples were gathered in the east gopuram hall for the counting process. A large number of people, including temple staff and volunteers from Thanjavur and Salem districts, participated in the day-long counting operation.

The temple administration announced that they received offerings amounting to Rs 1,16,57,019, 32 grams of gold, 4 kg 950 grams of silver, and 91 foreign currencies.

Ramanathaswamy Temple

Located in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district, the iconic Ramanathaswamy Temple continues to draw thousands of devotees each month—many of them from outside India—who contribute generously to its donation boxes. In the previous counting held in April, the temple recorded a total collection of Rs 1,47,42,943 in cash, along with 98 grams of gold, 4.1 kilograms of silver, and donations in 162 different foreign currencies.

These offerings are a testament to the deep faith devotees have in the temple’s sanctity and spiritual significance. The money collected is directed toward improving temple infrastructure, enhancing facilities for pilgrims, and supporting charitable activities.

A Centre of Faith And Heritage

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India. It holds special importance for those undertaking the Char Dham Yatra and is also home to one of the 12 revered Jyotirlingas.

Located on Rameswaram Island, the temple is renowned not only for its spiritual relevance but also for its awe-inspiring architecture—featuring grand gopurams and a series of beautifully sculpted corridors and pillars. Its island setting and historic legacy make it a must-visit destination for spiritual seekers and tourists alike.

Systematic Monthly Count

The temple follows a well-organized practice of counting offerings every month. The presence of numerous foreign currencies among the offerings indicates the temple’s strong international appeal.

The contributions help sustain day-to-day temple operations while funding ongoing maintenance and community welfare programs.
