Rs 2,500 on-spot fine for men in found in women’s railway spaces

Bhopal: Bhopal Railway Division has introduced stricter penalties for men found in spaces reserved for women.Under the new rules, any male passenger entering a ladies’ coach, women’s berth or dedicated waiting room without authorization will face an on-spot fine of Rs 2,500.

Failure to pay may invite further legal action and a court-imposed penalty of up to Rs 5,000.Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Sourabh Kataria said the move is part of a broader enforcement drive to improve safety for female travellers.“The objective is to create safer and more secure travel environments for women. Penalty amounts, unchanged for a long time, have been revised to reflect current circumstances,” Kataria said. The rule covers all railway spaces explicitly designated for women, including ladies’ coaches, reserved berths and station waiting rooms. Officials said the tightened regime is aimed at deterring misuse and ensuring the facilities remain accessible to the intended beneficiaries.Women’s safety campaigners welcomed the step but called for complementary measures. Retired professor HS Yadav urged authorities to pair penalties with awareness and better signage.

“Penalties are important, but clear information and proactive monitoring at stations and on trains are equally necessary,” he said.Railway officials said awareness campaigns will be launched at major stations and enforcement staff will get enhanced training. Passengers have been asked to report violations through existing helplines and grievance portals. The revised guidelines are part of wider efforts to upgrade passenger security and boost confidence in public transport. The Bhopal division appealed to commuters to follow regulations and help maintain a safe, clean and disciplined travel environment.
