Silchar: Cachar police in coordination with Assam Rifles seized heroin valued around Rs 3.2 crore and arrested five persons along the Silchar–Kalain Road.Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team launched a special anti-narcotics drive on Saturday evening and intercepted two vehicles during the operation.During a search of the vehicles, the team recovered 48 soap cases containing suspected heroin weighing approximately 538g, police sources said.Five persons travelling in the vehicles were arrested on the spot. The team also recovered six mobile phones from their possession, which are believed to be linked to the trafficking network.Police estimated the market value of the seized heroin to be around Rs 3.2 crore in the international market.
A senior police official said the operation was carried out as part of the ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking in the district. “Based on reliable information, the joint team intercepted the vehicles and recovered the contraband hidden in soap cases,” the official said.The arrested individuals are currently being interrogated to ascertain the source of the drugs and the possible links of the network operating in the region.Police said further investigation is underway to identify other persons involved in the smuggling racket.
