Rs 4L cash found scattered on Shamli highway; passersby hand it to cops

Shamli: It was a usual day on the Meerut–Karnal highway when an unusual scene unfolded near the Kabaraut bridge in Shamli, with currency notes falling off from the backpack of a young biker and getting scattered on a stretch of nearly half a km.The incident came to light after one Amit Kumar, 30, a resident of Kharad village in Muzaffarnagar, told police that he saw bundles of currency notes falling from a bag of a speeding biker zipping past him near Kabaraut CNG station on Wednesday evening.Kumar said he chased the biker but failed to catch up with him, and collected the money before dialling 112.Gyanendra Kumar, a jaggery seller who runs a shop on the highway, said several commuters also stopped to collect the money that had rained down and handed it over to police.Additional SP Sumit Shukla said police deposited six bundles of Rs 500 notes, four of Rs 200 and two bundles of Rs 100 denomination, totalling Rs 4 lakh, in the malkhana. “The cash will be handed over to the rightful owner after verification and submission of relevant documents,” said Shukla.Shamli SHO Sachin Sharma said a man from Budhana, Muzaffarnagar, arrived at Kotwali police station on Friday, claiming the money was his. “He had withdrawn the amount from a bank branch in Haryana’s Karnal district and was heading home when he lost it,” said SHO Sharma, adding police are in touch with bank officials to verify the man’s claim and have sought documents for confirmation.
