Wayanad Landslide: Another video has surfaced on social media platforms capturing the terrifying moment as a massive landslide struck the Kalladi tunnel project site in Kerala’s Wayanad district, sending a torrent of mud and debris crashing onto a road and bridge as people desperately ran for safety.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, showed a huge section of the hillside collapsing within seconds near Meenakshi Bridge. People can be seen standing under umbrellas and watching from a distance as the ground suddenly gives way, sending tonnes of mud and debris crashing downhill.

As the mudslide gathers speed, an eyewitness can be heard shouting, “Run fast friends. Take a photo," while workers and bystanders scramble to escape.

The landslide swept away a fuel tanker parked on the bridge and dragged it across the road before it crashed into a parked jeep. CCTV footage from a nearby commercial establishment also showed several people, including a woman, attempting to outrun the advancing mud before being engulfed by it.

The lorry slammed into a jeep parked there, and then the visuals showed a man and a woman who were outrun by the landslide coming out from the space between the two vehicles, completely covered in the thick mud, having miraculously survived the terrifying incident.

A couple of other men could also be seen limping away, covered in mud.

Those present near the shops ran away to safety the moment they saw the mudslide breaking through the barriers.

The mudslide also pushed a private bus, reportedly used to ferry workers to the tunnel construction site, into a nearby river. Later visuals showed the vehicle lying partially submerged as rescue teams searched the area.

Subsequent visuals showed the bridge and surrounding area completely covered by huge layers of mud as rescue personnel attempted to ascertain whether people were trapped underneath it.

According to Kerala authorities, two people were killed and at least seven others were injured in the incident, while several people are feared trapped beneath the debris.

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Fire and Rescue Services, police, Forest Department and local residents have been deployed to search for those feared trapped beneath the debris.

“The collapse occurred within a fraction of a second on a slope located at the extreme left edge, outside the designated construction boundary. Within three to four seconds, the debris rushed towards the Meenakshi Bridge area," an engineer associated with the project told the media.

According to the engineer, members of the technical team stationed on the opposite side of Meenakshi Bridge managed to escape safely, but several others were caught in the sudden surge of mud.

The landslide occurred near the proposed Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel road project connecting Wayanad and Kozhikode districts, where construction has been underway since last year.

The project team also maintained that tunnelling work had not been carried out since June 12 and that only reinforcement and safety-related activities were underway.

Around 15 personnel had reportedly been deployed at the designated mud disposal area to construct a gabion wall and undertake slope protection work when the landslide struck.

Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan said the tragedy was not caused by the absence of an appropriate weather warning but by the contractor’s failure to remove the large quantity of accumulated mud despite repeated directions from authorities.
