How the Hollywood stars traded LA life for a quiet Santa Barbara farmhouse

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have relocated their family from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, seeking a more private upbringing for their daughters away from Hollywood's spotlight. This move aligns with their long-standing preference for a low-key life, prioritizing their children's well-being above industry attention. Their Santa Barbara farmhouse now serves as their primary family residence.

Where does Ryan Gosling live? The answer is no longer Los Angeles. Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have quietly built their family life in Santa Barbara, far from Hollywood’s daily glare. The couple, known for keeping their relationship private, reportedly chose to move north so their daughters, Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee, could grow up away from constant industry attention.

Their decision fits the low-key way they have handled fame, family, and life at home for years.

According to Architectural Digest, citing People, The Independent, Today, and Gosling’s appearance on The Tonight Show, the actor and Mendes now primarily live in Santa Barbara. People reported in 2024 that the family no longer lived in Los Angeles. One source told the outlet, “For them, the most important job is their girls.

Everything else comes second. And their girls are thriving. They left LA to live a bit further north, away from Hollywood.

They didn’t want the girls to grow up around other celebrity kids.”The move followed years of real estate changes. Before Mendes and Gosling became a couple, Mendes and filmmaker George Gargurevich bought a Los Feliz home for USD 584,000 in 2002. They split in 2010 and sold the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home for USD 1.27 million in 2014.

The property featured vintage wallpaper, European fixtures, city views, fruit trees, a chicken coop, raised vegetable boxes, a cedar hot tub, and an outdoor shower.

Gosling also owned a Studio City bachelor pad after moving to Los Angeles from Ontario as a teenager in the mid-1990s. The report describes it as a “modest two-bedroom LA house.” It was built in 1947 and later sold off-market to costume designer Mark Avery.

Gosling also opened the Moroccan restaurant Tagine in Beverly Hills. In 2008, Mendes bought a 3,900-square-foot Mediterranean Revival home in Los Feliz for USD 3.2 million.

The house became the couple’s family base after they got together in 2011. They later sold it for USD 4.9 million in 2018.By 2014, the couple had bought a Santa Barbara farmhouse that became their main home. The house reportedly has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a vaulted-ceiling great room, a dining room, and a kitchen with reclaimed barn wood cabinets.

Gosling once told Jimmy Fallon, “I’m like a dad first, and part of the reason for doing the film [2022’s ‘The Gray Man’] was this opportunity for us to go to these interesting places and be there with my kids.

” In a 2013 interview with The Independent, he also said, “[in] Los Angeles, it’s easy to lose touch with everything. You just sit in your car the whole time.” The couple’s move to Santa Barbara reflects that shift toward a quieter family life away from Hollywood.
