Signalling a major shift in the political dynamics of the plantation sector in the Devikulam constituency, former CPI(M) MLA, S. Rajendran appears set to contest as the BJP candidate. During a mega rally held in Munnar on Sunday, BJP State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar expressed his desire for Mr. Rajendran to represent the party in Devikulam, noting that a final decision will be made by the BJP central leadership.
“S. Rajendran will lead the BJP’s campaign in the Devikulam constituency during the upcoming Assembly elections. This election is vital for Munnar and will decide the future of the plantation sector,” said Mr Chandrasekhar.
He added that over the years, both major fronts had provided only empty promises. “In the next election, Munnar will change, and a developed Munnar will emerge. This transformation will be reflected under the leadership of Mr. Rajendran,” he said.
Mr. Chandrasekhar further asserted that only an NDA MLA could ensure genuine development in the region.
During the meeting, Mr. Rajendran demanded an Enforcement Directorate (ED) inquiry into the wealth of CPI(M) leaders in Munnar. “During my tenure as an MLA, I worked for the welfare of plantation workers. However, for the past five years, the CPI(M) has blocked my efforts,” Mr Rajendran alleged.
He specifically targeted CPI(M) district secretariat member K.V. Sasi, alleging that leaders are “travelling in cars bought with the money of plantation workers.”
“In my forty-year political career, I have not amassed wealth and am ready to face a social audit. The ED should inspect the sudden financial growth of CPI(M) leaders in Munnar,” he added.
Following months of speculation, Mr. Rajendran officially joined the BJP on January 18. According to party leaders, hundreds of plantation workers followed suit and joined the party at the Munnar rally on Sunday. The march began at the Munnar Juma Masjid and concluded in Old Munnar.
Party sources indicate that the BJP is strengthening its roots in Devikulam through Mr. Rajendran’s influence. “The large turnout of plantation workers on Sunday indicates that Mr Rajendran has already begun his campaign among them,” said a party leader.
