Two-time youth world champion Sakshi delivered a commanding performance to secure India’s first gold medal at the second World Boxing Cup, triumphing in the women’s 54kg final on Sunday.

The 24-year-old showcased her trademark aggression and precision, overpowering USA’s Yosline Perez with a unanimous decision victory.

India’s boxing contingent has enjoyed a highly successful campaign at the event, securing a total of 11 medals. This follows their strong showing in the first leg of the tournament held in Brazil, where the team won six medals, including one gold and one silver.

In the first session of finals, four Indian boxers competed, but it was Sakshi who emerged as the standout performer. Her speed, footwork, and flurry of combination punches proved too much for her American opponent, earning her the top spot on the podium.

Meanwhile, Meenakshi narrowly missed out on gold in the women’s 48kg category. Despite a spirited effort against local favorite Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazakhstan, she lost in a close 3-2 split decision.

Silvers for Jugnoo and Pooja Rani

In other bouts, Jugnoo (men’s 85kg) and Pooja Rani (women’s 80kg) settled for silver medals after losing their respective finals.

Jugnoo was outboxed by Kazakhstan’s Bekzad Nurdauletov in a 0-5 decision, while Pooja Rani suffered the same fate against Australia’s Eseta Flint, also losing 0-5.

India’s medal tally could grow further, with four more boxers set to fight for gold in the evening session. Leading the charge is Hitesh Gulia (men’s 70kg), who won gold in the Brazil leg. He will be joined by Abhinash Jamwal (men’s 65kg), Jaismine (women’s 57kg), and Nupur (women’s 85+kg) as India looks to cap off the tournament on a high.
