New Delhi: Samsung has officially unveiled its pill-shaped bottom bar for a host of system applications in One UI 8.5, the latest upgrade. Samsung has also been refining this design in the upcoming One UI 9 by making the floating bar more compact for users.

It focuses on increasing the screen space around the edges while keeping the floating look, which looks more compact. Samsung has yet to introduce the final version of One UI 8.5, based on Android 16 QPR2; some leaks about One UI 9, based on Android 17, are already starting to surface online.

Samsung has recently begun testing the next-generation software on devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Currently, while digging through the internal test build of One UI 9, some sources have suggested that the redesigned floating bar is in the Quick Share feature.

In some reports, some images have leaked in which users can see that the bar appears more compact than One UI 8.5, creating larger gaps on the sides and bottom. The bar becomes more rounded compared to what users see in the One UI 8.5. The tabs that also follow the pill-shaped design also have more rounded highlights when they are active.

Those small changes should improve the overall visual balance of the interface. Quick Share only shows two tabs, so the space appears wider. It will be interesting to see how Samsung will implement this tweak in applications like the Gallery, which features four tabs, as the spacing might require additional adjustments.

This development is based on the early build, so Samsung might still refine the design in upcoming One UI 9 internal builds. Samsung is also expected to kick off the beta program for the next-generation software in mid-2026. The final version could ship with the upcoming foldables, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8, which are expected in July 2026.
