At a vibrant conference, the Santhal Council expressed their firm opposition to the ongoing feud between the West Bengal government and the President's office. They called for the central government to recognize the ITDP regions of Bengal under the 5th Schedule, advocating for enhanced rights for tea tribes.
Jamshedpur: Santhal Council, a leading organisation of the Santhal tribes, has condemned the political controversy that arose between the West Bengal govt and the office of President Droupadi Murmu during the 9th International Santhal Conference held in Siliguri on March 7.The council said that the controversy is unprecedented and unfortunate and it needs to be condemned.Incidentally, President Murmu expressed public displeasure regarding administrative arrangements during her visit to the conference.Further, the council, on Wednesday, demanded from the central govt the inclusion of the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) area of Bengal in the 5th Schedule of the Constitution and the provision of scheduled tribe (ST) status to the tea tribes of Bengal.Besides, the outfit demanded from the govt that the recognised tribal language be made a means of communication in the judiciary in the states that have a significant ST population. The outfit has raised several other demands.
