India squash icon Saurav Ghosal has been appointed as the sports commissioner of the World Premier Squash, a new global professional competition slated for later this year.
Ghosal, the only Indian male player to break into the top 10 of the PSA World Rankings, has a remarkable record with 11 titles, nine Asian Games medals, and two decades of elite competition. He has also held significant roles, including men’s president of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) and co-chair of the joint Athletes Commission of the PSA and World Squash, the sport’s international governing body.
As Sports Commissioner for World Premier Squash (WPS), Ghosal will be responsible for establishing and overseeing the league’s entire sporting framework, including competition formats, player qualification pathways, and officiating standards, according to a statement from WPS. The league’s inaugural edition is scheduled for August.
WPS aims to merge elite professional competition with a global open pathway utilising multi-modal AI on the edge. Of the 24 players in the league, including reserves, eight will be elite professionals. The remaining 16 spots will be open for competitors worldwide through AI-enabled challenges on the Future of Sports Platform (FSP), allowing direct, merit-based entry without the need for agents, ranking history, or geographical constraints.
Ghosal believes the league has the potential to elevate the sport, which is set to debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, by identifying its next big player. He emphasised that the best squash players have often emerged from humble beginnings, and World Premier Squash recognises this by using AI-enabled challenges to connect the global squash community and provide a genuine path to the top for the sport’s next great player.
