As India continues to reel from the Twisha Sharma case, another woman has been found dead following alleged prolonged harassment over dowry demands. “Save me… they are beating me badly. They will kill me," the woman allegedly told her brother over the phone minutes before she was found dead on May 18.
According to a report by PTI, the 25-year-old woman was found critically injured outside a building in Dasghara village in west Delhi’s Inderpuri area. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Her family has alleged that she was murdered by her in-laws after prolonged harassment over dowry demands. The deceased is survived by her six-month-old son.
According to the victim’s brother, the call came shortly before news of her death reached the family.
“On May 18, my elder sister called me crying and said, ‘Save me, they are beating me badly. They will kill me.’ The call suddenly disconnected. Later, her brother-in-law informed us that she had jumped from the roof. But we believe they beat her and threw her from the fourth floor," he alleged.
The woman’s sister also recalled receiving a distress call from her moments before the incident.
“She told me, ‘Please come quickly, they are beating me. Let me hear my father’s voice once. I may never meet you again. Please take care of my six-month-old son and don’t hand him over to these people,’" she alleged.
The family said the woman had been subjected to repeated abuse and dowry-related harassment since her marriage in December 2022.
Her brother alleged that he had personally witnessed physical violence against her during previous visits to Delhi.
“I stayed with her for around 15 days and saw them beating and abusing her. Once, they beat her so badly that her eardrum burst. But she never allowed us to file a complaint because she wanted to save her marriage," he claimed.
Police said a PCR call regarding a woman falling from a building was received on May 18, following which a team reached the spot and shifted the injured woman to a hospital.
As the death occurred within seven years of marriage, proceedings under dowry death provisions were initiated and the matter was reported to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Karol Bagh.
The SDM recorded statements from family members, while forensic and crime teams inspected the scene and collected evidence.
Based on the family’s statements and findings from the post-mortem examination conducted on Tuesday, police registered an FIR at Inderpuri police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Husband Arrested
Police have arrested two accused — the victim’s husband, Raju Singh, 27, and his younger brother, Rajkumar, 22. Police said efforts are underway to trace the third accused named in the case.
According to investigators, Raju Singh worked as a private helper at a real estate group in Karol Bagh, while Rajkumar was employed with a travel company in the same area.
The victim’s family has alleged that three members of the in-laws’ family regularly harassed and assaulted her. They also claimed that the accused family often boasted about their financial influence and ability to “manage" legal cases.
