Manchester United's biggest rival might be themselves. After a 2-1 loss to Newcastle, Scholes took a bizarrer jab his old teammate Carrick in a now-deleted Instagram story.

Manchester United’s fiercest rival right now might not be Manchester City or Liverpool.

It might just be… Manchester United themselves.

And if Wednesday night’s drama on Tyneside proved anything, it’s that even the club’s own legends aren’t shy about piling on when things go wrong.

After United’s painful 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United, former midfield maestro Paul Scholes took a not-so-subtle swipe at his old club — and at his former teammate turned boss, Michael Carrick.

A chance squandered

United looked set to take something from the match after heading into the second half level, and with a man advantage.

Instead, the Red Devils completely lost their grip on the game. Newcastle snatched victory deep into stoppage time, with a dagger that killed United’s momentum and ended Carrick’s eight-game unbeaten start in charge.

For a team that had recently rediscovered some spark under Carrick, the performance felt like a throwback to darker days: slow, flat and lacking ideas.

Carrick’s substitutions also raised eyebrows, with their timing doing little to halt Newcastle’s late surge.

Scholes twists the knife

If the defeat itself wasn’t painful enough, Scholes quickly added fuel to the fire.

Moments after the final whistle, the United legend posted a blunt Instagram story.

“Michael has definitely got something special about him… Cos Utd have been CRAP last 4 games… Night! Tonali (heart emoji)"

The post, which included a heart emoji for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, was swiftly deleted. But screenshots spread quickly among fans.

Scholes has long been sceptical about Carrick taking the United job permanently, so his reaction wasn’t entirely surprising.

Still, publicly roasting your own club after its first loss in weeks isn’t exactly the most constructive move.

Awkward history

That sting is even sharper considering Scholes and Carrick shared the pitch 160 times for United between 2006 and 2013, winning five Premier League titles and a Champions League together.

And all this history is what makes the public jab feel less like tough love and more like an unnecessary cheap shot from one of the most respected legends of the club.

For the betterment of all, the Old Trafford faithful will be hoping that Scholes can stop being the bitter old man ranting at the pub.
