School club turns World Cup frenzy into learning strategy

Kochi: Harnessing the excitement surrounding FIFA World Cup, social science club of Ramamangalam High School has introduced an innovative learning initiative aimed at familiarising students with the 48 countries participating in the tournament and the continents they belong to.As part of the programme, students of class IX as well as their teachers have prepared a handmade world map and are marking the countries involved in each day’s matches. Pictures of their favourite football stars are also being displayed, turning the world cup into an engaging educational tool.“Through their favourite players and teams, students are learning about different countries, continents, international boundaries and climatic regions with enthusiasm.

Students themselves have taken the lead in preparing and presenting the world map, and participating nations are being marked daily based on the match schedule,” said social science teacher Anoop John.“As we all watch the world cup, learning about countries and continents has helped us to have a better understanding of the nation as well as their players and it has also made social science more interesting and enjoyable.”

said Devdath Gautham, a student.School headmistress Sindhu Peter said that at a time when social science is often considered a less interesting subject, the school has sought to channel students’ enthusiasm for football into learning. She added that prizes are also being distributed to encourage participation.
