School wall collapses in Ponnampet amid heavy rain

Madikeri: Due to the heavy rainfall in Ponnampet for the past two days, the compound wall of a Karnataka Public School has collapsed and toilets were damaged. A few days ago, the soil at the bottom of the compound wall was removed using a heavy earth mover, which weakened the foundation of the barrier wall.

As it is raining continuously, the soil loosened further and the wall collapsed.Villagers demanded that a permanent barrier be constructed, along with taking temporary protection measures.Headmaster BM Vijay said that the remaining compound wall is at risk of falling as the rainy season has just started. If the wall completely collapses, there is a possibility of further damage to the school building and toilets, he said.According to School Development Committee president Junaid, currently more than 360 children are studying in the school.Meanwhile, tourists had a miraculous escape as a tree got uprooted and fell on a car parked in a parking lot outside the Cauvery Nisargadhama in Kushalnagar on Sunday. The tree fell on the car in which tourists from Madikeri came to Nisargadhama. Though the vehicle was damaged, the driver and tourists escaped unhurt.
