Several districts in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana have announced a holiday of schools for Monday, July 14 in view of the Kanwar Yatra and ongoing month of Sawan (holy month dedicated to Lord Shiv).
In the annual pilgrimage, where Kanwariyas (devotees of Lord Shiv) collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva, the roads often get crowded and people witness traffic disruptions.
In view of this, holidays have been declared on different dates in a couple of districts of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to avoid traffic disruptions and inconvenience.
Additionally, to manage the surge of devotees and ensure the safety of schoolchildren, the district administrations of Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi and Budaun have ordered that all government and private schools would remain closed on all Mondays during the Sawan period.
Which Districts Are Affected?
1. Varanasi, UP: The district administration of Varanasi, the abode of Kashi Vishwanath (one of the twelve jyotirlingas of Lord Shiv), has announced that all government and private schools would remain closed on all Mondays during Sawan. All schools located on Kanwar routes to the temple town will remain closed every Monday during Sawan.
This action is in response to worries about the growing number of Kanwariyas using city streets for pedestrian purposes, influx of devotees to the holy town as well as the ensuing safety and traffic issues.
2. Badaun, UP: Similar to this, the district government of Budaun has mandated that schools stay closed on Sawan Mondays. In light of the growing number of devotees, the formal order was issued to avoid causing any disruption to school-going children and staff.
Authorities in Varanasi, Budaun, and the surrounding areas have taken preventive steps, including rerouting traffic and establishing school holidays, in response to these large gatherings.
3. Bareilly, UP: The district administration of Bareilly have announced the holiday of schools on every Monday of Saawan as along with the Saptnath temple of the city, Kanwariyas will perform Jalabhishek in Shiva temples including Guldiya Gaurishankar and Siddh Gopala Baba temple.
4. Haridwar, Uttarakhand: To avoid any congregation of school students with the large number of Kanwariyas, who collect Ganga water from the holy town, the district administration of Haridwar has announced that all educational institutions, including schools and Anganwadi centers, will be closed from July 14-23.
5. Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: All schools in Ujjain, the abode of Mahakaleshwar, (one of the twelve jyotirlingas of Lord Shiv) will also remain closed every Monday from July 14 to August 11. Every year, a large number of devotees thong the ancient temple to seek blessings of lord Mahakal.
6. Nuh, Haryana: Meanwhile, in Haryana, Nuh district has declared a school holiday on July 14 due to the Jalabhishek Yatra, which coincides with the Kanwar Yatra activities in the area.
The administration has also suspended internet services for 24 hours on Sunday amid fears of unrest and public disorder in the city.
A Haryana government directive said that there is a strong likelihood of disruption to public utilities, damage to public assets and amenities, and a threat to law and order in the district.
