A teenage girl allegedly died by suicide after jumping into a canal in Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli district after her mother scolded her for making social media reels, police said.

The incident came to light after the girl's body was recovered from a canal near Godhana village on Wednesday morning. Locals spotted the body floating near a bridge and alerted the police, following which officers reached the spot, retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.

According to the police, the deceased was a resident of Lewa Mod village and had recently gone to visit her maternal grandparents in the neighbouring Mirzapur district.

During the preliminary investigation, police learnt that the victim was making social media reels when her mother reprimanded her, asking her to reduce the use of social media and stop making videos. Investigators said the girl became upset after being scolded and later jumped into a canal at her maternal grandparents' village.

Her body was carried downstream by the canal before it was found near Godhana village in Chandauli's Alinagar area. Police said they traced her identity during the investigation and informed her family.

Talking about the incident, senior cop Arun Kumar Singh said that the police received information about a young woman's body lying in the canal. A team reached the spot, recovered the body and initiated an investigation.

Police have registered the case and said further legal proceedings are underway. The exact sequence of events and all circumstances surrounding the incident are being examined, while the post-mortem report is awaited.
