Harsh Singh, husband of Ruby Jain, has been arrested in connection with the alleged racial abuse and criminal intimidation of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar.

His wife, Ruby Jain, was arrested earlier in the day. Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain have been booked after a dispute over repair work. The issue began when dust from an air conditioner installation fell onto the couple’s floor.

Police registered a first information report under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 79 (word intended to insult a woman’s modesty), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 3(5) (common intention) and 196 (promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.).

Delhi CM reacts

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also spoke about the Malviya Nagar incident.

“I will soon meet those sisters against whom strict action has been taken. In the national capital, Delhi, everyone has equal rights. They work hard and give momentum to Delhi. I will also meet our colleagues from North East," she said.

Harsh apologised

Speaking to ANI, Singh said he and his wife were “definitely ashamed" of the incident. He said the remarks were made in the heat of the moment.

He added that they were cooperating fully with Delhi Police and had faith in the police and the Indian judiciary. He urged social media users to listen to both sides and asked that there be no media trials.

Singh alleged that his property was being attacked and that one of his men was about to be attacked. He said the situation escalated after one of the women came forward. He said they would accept any punishment given by the court.

He also claimed he was receiving obscene images of his mother on social media and requested that his family and profession not be dragged into the matter. He apologised to all Northeastern people.

What happened that day?

The incident took place on February 20, when three women from Arunachal Pradesh called an electrician to install an air conditioner in their flat at 3:30 pm.

During the drilling, dust and debris fell onto the floor below, leading Singh and his wife to object. The couple allegedly abused the electrician. One of the women said they defended him, stating he was only carrying out work at their home.

The argument escalated and the couple called the police. Videos of the incident later went viral on social media. In the footage, Ruby Jain was allegedly heard calling the women “momo", a term used as a slur referring to a popular northeastern dish.

The accused also allegedly called the women ‘sex workers’ and made derogatory remarks.
