A fresh FIR has been lodged against Sumit Roy
Midnapore: A fresh FIR has been filed against TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s personal assistant Sumit Roy in connection with the cash-for-jobs scam. The FIR was registered at Debra PS on June 16.The development comes amid a police manhunt for Roy, who is already facing a non-bailable arrest warrant from the Midnapore district court and a lookout circular issued by CID in a land scam case.According to the complaint lodged by Prosenjit Roy, former Midnapore MLA Sujoy Hazra demanded Rs 3.5 lakh per candidate, from June 2023 to Jan 2026, to secure 12 govt positions and pocketed an initial payment of Rs 12 lakh. The complainant alleged that Hazra introduced the victims to an accomplice, Ashik Kazi, claiming he was a govt employee posted at Nabanna. Kazi allegedly escorted the candidates to govt buildings — Khadya Bhavan and Bikash Bhavan — where fake medical examinations were conducted. When the promised jobs failed to materialise, Kazi allegedly demanded more money, claiming it was meant for Abhishek Banerjee’s PA. The job hopefuls were eventually given colour photocopies of forged appointment letters. When they demanded their money back, they were allegedly threatened with false lawsuits.Roy’s link to Hazra emerged during the interrogation of the former MLA. Hazra was remanded in jail custody last Saturday over a land scam case handled by Salboni police.
