#SendBarron: Melania Trump reacts to calls for son's military draft, says he needs 'nonstop' supervision

The ongoing conflict involving the Iran, the United States and Israel has emerged as one of the more unusual wars in recent history, one that many Americans themselves appear reluctant to support.

While the decision to initiate military action ultimately rests with the president, public sentiment within the US suggests widespread scepticism about the necessity of the conflict.According to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS, nearly 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of the US decision to take military action in Iran, with most claiming that a long-term military conflict between the two nations is likely. While 60% said they do not think Trump has a clear plan for handling the situation, 62% say he should get congressional approval for any further military action. As debate over the war intensifies, criticism has also begun to surface online in the form of satire. Recently, South Park writer Toby Morton launched a satirical website titled DraftBarronTrump.com.The site mocks the 79-year-old President by encouraging him to send his own son, Barron, the youngest, to war. It cites Trump's "courage" and "proven genes" as arguments for sending his 19-year-old son to war, in an attempt to make him realise the dark reality of the consequences of war.

The launch of the website and its circulation online had also led to the birth of a trending hashtag: #SendBarron with thousands of social media users calling the POTUS to send his son to war alongside the soldiers he has sent to battle. Moreover, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt's claim that President Trump isn't taking any "options off the table" when asked about fears that "we're going to have a draft" further escalated the call-out and rage.

Would Melania let Barron get drafted?

Melania Trump, who remains an enigmatic anomaly for the Americans who had to walk to the theatres to get to know their first lady, is known for being extremely protective of her son. It seems she would not let her 19-year-old, only son, get drafted to the military to serve the nation. When asked about Barron, who is a New York University student, she said: “You need to be there for a child nonstop, especially when they need you, especially at that age that Barron is,” to Fox Business. However, she also praised his knowledge of politics which has progressed over the years considering he was only ten when his father first entered office. “He understands politics, and he gives advice to his father. We talk about it so differently,” she said.While initially there were reports of Barron having an entire floor to himself in the Trump Tower, he has reportedly moved to Washington, D.C. with his parents while taking classes at NYU's D.C.

Gossip columnist Rob Shuter reported on his Naughty But Nice Substack that Melania took swift action after photos of Barron standing next to his father in the resort's dining area surfaced online.

“Melania made it very clear that Barron’s privacy is non-negotiable,” Shuter reported. “Anyone caught filming or taking pictures would face immediate consequences, including potential banning from the club.”

Can Barron Trump be drafted into US military?

The United States armed forces have been volunteer-only since 1973. However, all American men aged 18-25 are still required to register for the Selective Service System which keeps a database of military-aged men in case conscription becomes necessary. At 19, Barron would surely be a part of the database. But would he be able to get drafted? It seems not. Standing at 6-foot-9, Barron is too tall to serve in the military considering the US Army has a 6-foot-8 maximum height requirement. This is because taller individuals face difficulty fitting comfortably in standard military vehicles, such as armoured vehicles, tanks or aircraft. Additionally, if Barron received a medical exemption, he would surely be following in the footsteps of his father.

Dr Larry Braunstein, a Queens-based podiatrist who died in 2007, diagnosed Trump with bone spurs in 1968, enabling him to avoid the military draft. In a conversation with the New York Times, Dr Elysa Braunstein and Sharon Kessel, daughters of the late doctor revealed how their father frequently relayed the story.Even before this diagnosis, Trump had escaped getting drafted in the military about four times, due to his education.

In 2016, he disclosed that a doctor "gave me a letter - a very strong letter - on the heels" to present to draft authorities. Considering that Barron is the youngest son of a father who has been the POTUS twice, is an American business tycoon and has escaped military drafting himself, one could consider that he was legally and otherwise, safe from stepping into the battlefield.
