Manchester United target Sergio Ramos for a defensive boost, submitting an offer after his Monterrey exit.

It’s finally starting to look like Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United has an identity — and now the club reportedly want to fast-track the rebuild with a blockbuster veteran signing: Sergio Ramos.
United’s defensive frailties have been impossible to ignore this season. Injuries, inconsistency and a chronic lack of leadership have left the backline wobbling every other week.
And across Europe, one profile remains in short supply: experienced centre-backs who can calm a dressing room and command a back four.
So it’s no surprise that United are eyeing Ramos =- a footballing icon, a four-time Champions League winner, and a player whose presence alone can tighten a defence.
According to Cadena SER (via GOAL), United have already submitted an offer to bring the 39-year-old to Old Trafford on a free transfer after his departure from Monterrey.
Ramos played his final match for the Mexican club in their Liga MX playoff semi-final loss to Toluca on December 7 and is understood to be keen on returning to Europe.
For United, the appeal is obvious. Ramos brings elite positioning, ruthless competitiveness, and decades of big-game experience. Even at 39, he remains a transformational short-term addition — the sort of stop-gap leader United have lacked since the exits of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Third Time’s The Charm?
And this isn’t United’s first chase. Back in 2015, the club were deep into negotiations, even tabling a £28.6 million offer, before Ramos ultimately renewed with Real Madrid. Eight years later, in 2023, United returned with another late proposal worth around £73,000 per week — only for Ramos to swiftly reject it, reportedly catching club officials off-guard.
This time won’t be easy either. Several clubs in La Liga and Serie A are already circling, sensing the opportunity to add a leader without a transfer fee.
United may “go all out," but landing Ramos will depend on whether the legend sees Old Trafford as the right final chapter.
