Seven Chennai constituencies record above 70% polling till 3pm

CHENNAI: Polling in seven of Chennai’s 16 assembly constituencies crossed the 70% mark by 3 pm on Thursday, with several segments in the city recording voter turnout comparable to high-polling districts in the rest of Tamil Nadu.

At least 19 lakh people out of the 28.3 lakh voters have cast their votes in the city. Polling will continue till 6pm. In 2021, a total of 23.94 lakh people in Chennai voted across the 16 constituencies.According to a bulletin released by the Election Commission at 3.35 pm, constituencies including Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar, Perambur, Kolathur, Villivakkam, Anna Nagar, Virugambakkam and T. Nagar recorded above 70% turnout.Virugambakkam recorded 71.81%, RK Nagar 71.93% and Perambur 71.84% turnout . Chepauk-Triplicane, Thousand Lights, Egmore, Harbour and Velachery were in the high 60s, with estimated turnout ranging between 67.49% and 69.45%. Core city constituencies such as Mylapore reported the lowest at 60.6% followed by Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar at 62.27%.In Saidapet and Royapuram, the Election Commission’s provisional figures showed turnout at 64.45% and 63.35% respectively as of 3pm, indicating steady polling through the afternoon.
