Surat: The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) raised the problems affecting the textile, plastic, diamond, and chemical industries in particular due to the ongoing war in the Middle East. In a meeting with Gujarat Dy CM Harsh Sanghavi, SGCCI demanded immediate measures to provide relief to the industries in Surat and south Gujarat.
SGCCI president Nikhil Madrasi said, “The ongoing situation in the Gulf region is having a direct and serious impact on the industries of South Gujarat. The current situation is particularly challenging for the textile, diamond and chemical industries. If the right policy support and government support are provided in time, the industries can come out of this situation. It is very important for the state and central governments to take immediate and practical steps.
The SGCCI asked the state government to take the following issues seriously and intervene immediately, so that the industries get relief and the negative impact on the state economy is reduced.
Forex volatility and rising production costs –The depreciation of the rupee and the huge fluctuation in foreign currencies have led to a significant increase in the cost of imported raw materials, which is impacting the profitability of industries, hence the SGCCI suggested the State Government to take appropriate measures through the Reserve Bank of India to keep the exchange rate stable.
Raw material shortage and price uncertainty –Due to the constant change in crude oil prices, both the availability and prices of raw materials have become uncertain, due to which industries are facing difficulty in planning production, hence the Chamber requested for the implementation of a transparent and stable pricing mechanism.
Disruption in industrial gas supply – The production process is being disrupted due to disruptions in gas supply, hence the Chamber requested for increasing gas supply from alternative countries and streamlining the distribution system.
LPG Shortage and Reverse Migration of Workers –Due to shortage of LPG cylinders in labor colonies, workers are facing difficulties, due to which they are returning to their hometowns. In such a situation, a presentation was made to ensure distribution of Aadhaar card based LPG cylinders and continuous supply.
Direct impact of war on diamond industry– Due to disruption in trading hubs like Dubai and Antwerp, diamond exports have been severely affected and stocks have been stuck. In such a situation, it was proposed that re-import of stocks without customs duty be allowed and efforts should be intensified to make India a global trading hub.
Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat Harshbhai Sanghvi listened to the presentation made by the Chamber of Commerce very calmly. He assured the office bearers of the Chamber that the government would take serious note of the various issues and take immediate steps to remove the difficulties currently faced by the industries.
