A major tragedy was averted after a gun accidentally discharged during the ceremonial final salute at the last rites of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday.
The misfire occurred when a police official was loading the rifle for the salute as Pawar was being given Mukhagni, triggering brief panic at the cremation ground.
No one was injured, and a major mishap was narrowly averted in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several senior political leaders.
Ajit Pawar was cremated with full state honours at the Vidya Pratishthan ground in his hometown Baramati amid an outpouring of grief.
Thousands of supporters gathered to bid farewell to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, whose influence and popularity cut across party lines.
As slogans of “Amar Rahe, Amar Rahe" echoed through the ground, Pawar’s sons, Parth and Jay, lit the funeral pyre around 12.15 pm.
Earlier, his mortal remains were brought to the venue from his Katewadi residence shortly after 10 am, where locals queued up in large numbers to pay their final respects.
Baramati came to a standstill for the second consecutive day, with shops, hotels, educational institutions, and business establishments remaining shut.
From early morning, roads leading to the cremation ground were flooded with supporters, party workers, and leaders who affectionately referred to him as ‘Ajitdada’.
Ajit Pawar died on Wednesday after the chartered aircraft he was travelling in crashed at Baramati airport, killing all five people on board.
Apart from his immediate family, including his wife and Rajya Sabha MP Sunetra Pawar, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, Baramati MP Supriya Sule, and other relatives, several national and state leaders attended the funeral.
Those present included Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union ministers Nitin Gadkari and Murlidhar Mohol, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Harshavardhan Sapkal.
Despite the brief scare caused by the accidental firing, the ceremony concluded peacefully under tight security.
