Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin launched a sharp attack on the Congress party saying the BJP’s repeated electoral victories were due more to Congress than to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
During a DMK Youth Wing organisers’ meeting held at the Chennai Anna Institute of Arts and Science, Udhayanidhi Stalin said he had once believed PM Modi and Amit Shah were solely responsible for the BJP’s continued success, but had now come to the conclusion that Congress was the real reason behind the party’s victories.
“I used to think that Modi and Amit Shah were the reason for BJP’s continuous victories; now it turns out that Congress is the reason for that," he said.
The DMK leader also criticised Congress sharply, saying the party “should never be trusted at any time" and “shouldn’t even be approached."
His remarks came after Congress severed ties from DMK after elections and agreed to extend conditional backing to TVK. In the 2026 assembly elections, DMK only secured 59 seats, and Congress won 5.
The DMK youth wing intensified its criticism of the Congress party over its decision to sever ties after the election, describing the move as a “betrayal". The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), however, hit back by objecting to the use of terms such as “betrayal" and “backstabbing".
The DMK youth wing held its first meeting since the party’s recent poll defeat at the DMK headquarters in Chennai, with former chief minister MK Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin in attendance.
During the meeting, the youth wing passed a resolution accusing Congress of having “betrayed" the DMK.
“Congress won several MLAs and MPs over the years only because of the efforts of the DMK cadre. Even in the recently concluded assembly election, Congress managed to win five assembly seats due to the work carried out by DMK functionaries. Congress, despite being a national party, secured a Rajya Sabha seat before the election with the support of DMK MLAs, but shifted camps overnight without even expressing gratitude," the resolution stated.
The resolution further alleged that Congress leaders were motivated by a “desire for posts" and accused the party of failing to uphold the “basic political civility" expected from a historic political movement.
Meanwhile, TNCC issued a statement on X condemning DMK. “Difference of opinion are natural in democratic politics, but expressing them through unnecessary words and accusations is not benefiting political decency. TNCC completely rejects accusations of treason and backstabbing levelled against us," TNCC said.
