Shruthi Krishna's extraordinary story: Raised by two mothers, unaware of her biological parent, yet one of Kannada cinema's finest

For fans, Shruthi Krishna will always be remembered as Ambili from 'Kottaram Veettile Apputtan', whose comic timing left a lasting impression despite her brief stint in the industry.

But beyond those memorable appearances lies the story of one of Kannada cinema's most celebrated performers. A three-time State Award-winning actor, Shruthi has built an illustrious career spanning more than three decades while also making headlines for her unconventional upbringing.Born as Girija into a family deeply rooted in theatre, Shruthi grew up in a household that often sparked curiosity. Krishna, married twin sisters Radha and Rukmini, both members of his drama troupe.The couple raised three children together: Shruthi, actor Sharan and Usha. Interestingly, the family has never publicly disclosed which child was born to which mother. Even more striking, Shruthi has said she herself doesn't know who her biological mother is.Speaking to SCREEN about it in the past, she explained that she never felt the need to find out.

"For us, we didn't feel it was necessary. If we wanted to, it's a simple matter of finding the answer with one question. But we are not separate; we believe everyone is one. They are both mothers to us. They love us equally, and we feel the same in return. There is no distinction of who belongs to whom."

How Girija became Shruthi

Shruthi stepped into films as a teenager with 'Nambidre Nambi Bitre Bidi' in 1990. During the early phase of her career, she appeared under the screen name Priyadarshini, a choice she wasn't particularly fond of but accepted as a newcomer.Her identity changed while working on 'Shruthi'. Director Dwarakish suggested she adopt the film's title as her screen name. The decision proved to be a turning point. The film emerged as a commercial success, and "Shruthi" soon became one of the most recognisable names in Kannada cinema.

A career filled with awards and memorable performances

Following her breakthrough, Shruthi established herself as one of Kannada cinema's most dependable actors, effortlessly balancing emotional dramas, family entertainers and performance-driven roles.Her work in 'Aaghaatha' earned her the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actress, while 'Kalki' fetched her the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress. Personal setbacks beyond the spotlight

While her professional journey flourished, Shruthi experienced turbulence in her personal life.She married filmmaker S. Mahendar during the peak of her career, and the couple welcomed a daughter, Gowri Shruthi. However, their marriage ended after 11 years. In 2013, she married journalist and poet Chakravarthy Chandrachud, but that relationship also ended within a year.Alongside cinema, Shruthi entered public life through politics. She is associated with the BJP and has held positions including chairperson of the Karnataka Women and Child Development Corporation and the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation.

Still admired across generations

Apart from her award-winning performances, Shruthi also emerged as the winner of 'Bigg Boss Kannada' Season 3, introducing herself to a new generation of viewers.Most recently, she appeared in the Kannada films 'Surya: The Power of Love' and 'Majestic 2'.
