Sift Kaur Samra has won gold in women's 50m rifle 3 positions and led India to team victory at the Asian Shooting Championships.

Olympian Sift Kaur Samra made it a memorable day for India by clinching the individual women’s 50m rifle 3 positions gold and helping the nation bag the team title at the Asian Shooting Championships on Tuesday.

World record holder Samra fired an impressive 459.2 in the final to surpass China’s Yang Yujie (458.8) for the gold. Alongside Anjum Moudgil and Ashi Chouksey, Samra led the team to victory with an aggregate of 1753 points.

This marked Samra’s fourth Asian Championships gold. She dominated the event, qualifying for the eight-shooter final in the No.1 position with a score of 589.

Another Indian, Shriyanka Sadandi, who topped the qualification round, was not eligible for the final as she was competing for ‘Ranking Points Only’ (RPO). RPO shooters cannot compete for medals.

Samra scored 151 and 156.2 in the kneeling and prone positions, respectively. During the standing-elimination round, she remained unbeatable and maintained her lead until the end, despite a late challenge from her Chinese rival, who finished just 0.4 points behind her.

Japan’s Nobata Misaki (448.2) secured the bronze.

Chouksey, who had entered the final in fourth place, finished seventh with 402.8 points.

Senior pro and two-time Olympian Anjum finished 22nd in a competitive field of 41 shooters.

Samra also led the team event, guiding India to the gold medal alongside Anjum and Ashi. Samra fired a superb 589, Ashi shot 586, and Anjum managed 578 as the trio clinched the top spot ahead of Japan (1750) and South Korea (1745).

On Monday, National Games champion Neeru Dhanda had one of her finest days in the sport, winning the women’s trap gold medal.
