Public transport systems in fast-growing cities is often a balance between convenience and discipline. In Bengaluru, a recent incident inside Namma Metro has brought this fine line into focus, after a video showing passengers singing inside a coach led to a case being registered and sparked wider debate about commuter behaviour.
The controversy began when a video went viral on social media showing a group of young men and women inside a metro coach, reportedly the women’s compartment. With all seats occupied, the group was seen sitting on the floor and singing loudly. While no one in the video appeared to confront them directly, the act was seen by many as disruptive to fellow passengers.
As the video circulated online, it drew strong reactions. Many users questioned whether such behaviour, often done for social media content, was appropriate in a public transport setting. Others pointed out that such incidents, if left unchecked, could become more frequent and affect the travel experience of daily commuters.
What Metro Rules Say
According to existing Namma Metro guidelines, passengers are not allowed to sit on the floor or engage in activities that cause inconvenience to others. Loud singing or creating noise that disturbs fellow travellers falls under rule violations.
The metro system has laid down clear instructions to ensure smooth and comfortable travel. Playing music or watching videos on mobile phones without headphones is not permitted. Similarly, eating inside trains, travelling under the influence of alcohol, and consuming tobacco products are also prohibited.
These rules are designed to maintain order and ensure that all passengers can travel without disturbance.
Case Registered, Concerns Rise
Following the incident, a case has been registered at Peenya police station by BMRCL, bringing the issue into sharper focus. Authorities have reiterated that violations of metro rules can lead to fines and legal action.
Officials have also expressed concern over the growing trend of passengers engaging in activities inside metro coaches for social media attention. Similar incidents have been reported in Bengaluru and other cities as well, adding to the concern that such behaviour may spread if not addressed firmly.
A Larger Question on Public Behaviour
The episode has once again highlighted the importance of maintaining basic public decorum in shared spaces. For a system like Namma Metro, which handles thousands of passengers daily, adherence to rules plays a crucial role in ensuring safety and comfort.
As authorities continue their investigation, the incident serves as a reminder that even seemingly harmless actions can have wider implications when they affect others in public spaces.
