New Delhi: Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 upgrade has been expected to unveil a more flexible approach to AI within Siri, by allowing the users to choose which chatbot they want the assistant to work with. Third-party AI applications downloaded from the App Store, such as Google’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude, could be used to generate responses via Siri, similar to the existing ChatGPT integration.

Siri’s core intelligence is still likely to be powered by the Gemini models as part of Apple’s broader AI strategy.

Third-party AI support with ChatGPT under the Apple Intelligence in 2024, where users could optionally route certain queries to OpenAI’s chatbot. It has also reported developing an Extensions system that would enable multiple AI services to plug into Siri.

These integrations would be managed via a dedicated settings menu across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, by offering users control over which services are allowed.

This shift also eliminates the need for one-off partnerships like the ChatGPT deal by making it easier for Apple to support multiple AI providers at once. It would also enable the chatbot applications to integrate more directly with Siri and potentially a future standalone Siri application by extending how users interact with the AI across Apple devices.

The extensions system is distinct from Apple’s ongoing work to upgrade Siri by using Google’s Gemini models. While the Extensions would let the users choose external services for the specific queries, Gemini is expected to play a deeper role in powering Siri’s underlying capabilities.

Apple has also asked Google to explore setting up dedicated servers for the Gemini-powered Siri, suggesting that several AI processing tasks could rely on Google Cloud.

This also comes even as Apple continues to emphasize on-device processing and its Private Cloud Compute system, with any cloud usage expected to meet Apple’s privacy standards.
