The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stated that the case of Ajith Kumar – a temple guard from Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district – was a police custodial killing and that all ten police officials charged were directly involved.

The CBI also confirmed that the complaint raised against Kumar was false.

What Is The Case About?

Ajith Kumar (27) died on June 28, 2025, due to police brutality while in custody. He had been detained by the police on June 27 based on a complaint filed by a woman, alleging theft of jewellery.

The autopsy revealed 44 injuries on the victim’s body, pointing towards severe police violence. Later, video evidence came to light, showing the brutal treatment of Ajith Kumar by police officials in the name of an investigation.

Following this, the Madras High Court ordered the CBI to conduct a probe into the matter, as it acknowledged that the case pertained to a custodial death.

The central probe agency subsequently charged six officials during the probe, including constables Prabhu, Kannan, Sankara Manikandan, Raja and Anand, along with police driver Ramachandran.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Manamadurai) was suspended, and Sivaganga Superintendent of Police Ashish Rawat was transferred.

Later, the CBI filed a charge sheet, naming the then Manamadurai DSP N Shanmugasundaram, the then Thiruppuvanam Inspector Ramesh Kumar, the then Sub-Inspector Sivakumar, and the then Head Constable Ilayaraja, who are lodged in prison.

The CBI made the statement during the hearing on the bail pleas of the four officers. Ajith Kumar’s mother had filed a petition before the Madras HC, opposing their release.

The court denied bail to the accused, observing a person had been killed over a baseless complaint.
