In a tragic incident, six people drowned in the Cauvery River near the Arakeshwara Temple in KR Nagar, Mysuru, while two others remain in critical condition.

The deceased have been identified as Yasin (23), Neha (22), and Aiman (13) from Bengaluru, Fatima (30) from Ooty, Afif (13) from KR Nagar, and Umer (5) from Mysuru.

The incident occurred near Hale Edathore, where a group had come to attend a religious event. Eight people reportedly entered the river for a swim, of whom six drowned.

The two injured have been shifted to Mysuru for further treatment. KR Nagar police visited the spot and are conducting an inquiry.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed grief over the tragedy. In a post on X, he said it was “heartbreaking" and prayed for the departed souls to attain eternal peace, while urging strength for the bereaved families. Announcing compensation, the Chief Minister said Rs 5 lakh would be provided to the kin of each deceased.

“I pray to God that the departed souls attain eternal peace, and that the bereaved family members find the strength to bear the pain of their loss. With humanitarian concern that the lives grieving the loss of family members should not face further hardship from financial challenges, a compensation of 5 lakh rupees each will be provided to the families of the deceased," he wrote on X.

“I wish that those who were rescued in the accident and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital recover swiftly and rejoin their loved ones as soon as possible," the chief minister added.
