Six Maoist cadres from south Bastar region of Chhattisgarh surrender before police in Kothagudem

Six members of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) from neighbouring Chhattisgarh have surrendered before police in Telangana’s Kothagudem town on Saturday, taking the total number of surrenders in Bhadradri Kothagudem district to 300 this year.

The welfare measures being implemented by the Telangana government for the surrendered Maoists is the main driving force behind the spate of surrenders, police said.

As many as six Maoist cadres and militia members from Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar region, a hotbed of Maoist activity, turned themselves in before Bhadradri Kothagudem Superintendent of Police B. Rohith Raju in Kothagudem on Saturday.

Punem Lalu alias Rakesh, 35, Company Party Committee Member (CYPCM), PLGA Battalion, Artillery Platoon, HQ Company, Bijapur, was among those who surrendered.

So far, 300 CPI (Maoist) cadres of various ranks have surrendered in the district. Approximately ₹58 lakh has been provided to them as an interim relief for their rehabilitation, the SP said.

He added that the six surrendered Maoist cadres will be provided interim relief of ₹25,000 each. The remaining amount of ₹10.75 lakh will be deposited in their bank accounts in the form of cheques after receiving their Aadhaar cards and bank accounts.
