Solicitor General Tushar Mehta draws parallels between Ketan Agarwal's murder and Meghalaya honeymoon murder case

Drawing an apparent reference to the alleged murder of Pune realtor Ketan Agarwal by his fiancée, Siya Goyal, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on Friday expressed concern before the Supreme Court over rising cases of brutality within relationships.

Mehta, appearing for the State in the infamous Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, opposed the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, on their honeymoon in May 2025.

Referring to the alleged murder of Ketan Agarwal, he said: “Recently, a woman killed her husband (fiancée) because he was wearing a wig“.

Agarwal, 25, was pushed off a cliff at Pune’s Lohagad Fort by his fiancee, Siya Goyal, and her lover, Chetan Chaudhary on June 18 this year. While the death was initially viewed as an accident, the deceased’s family later grew suspicious over Siya’s inconsistent account of the sequence of events.

As multiple theories swirled around the motive behind the killing, allegations surfaced that Siya conspired to kill Ketan because “he wore a wig". However, the deceased’s father junked the claims, saying she and her family had been informed of it before the duo’s engagement.

At present, Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary are in police custody as an investigation remains underway.

Sonam Raghuvanshi To Remain Out On Bail

Sonam Raghuvanshi –– the prime accused in the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi –– will remain out on bail, the Supreme Court held.

A resident of Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, she was arrested in June last year in connection with her husband’s killing on their honeymoon in Meghalaya’s Sohra –– a case infamously dubbed as the Meghalaya honeymoon murder.

The couple had gone on a honeymoon on May 20. Three days later, they went missing. On June 2, Raja’s body was recovered from a deep gorge near the Wei Sawdong Falls at Riat Arliang in Sohra.

Earlier, the Meghalaya government had approached the top Court after the state’s High Court upheld a Shillong Court’s April order granting bail to the accused.

A bench of justices MM Sundresh and Sheel Nagu expressed reservations over the Meghalaya HC order but refused to stay it, noting Raghuvanshi had already been released from jail.
