 Gameplay reveal showcases Faye’s new journey and more

God of War: Laufey is now official. Sony and Santa Monica Studio have officially announced the next mainline entry in the God of War franchise which was during the Japanese gaming giant's latest PlayStation State of Play presentation.

The reveal included a gameplay trailer introducing Faye, also known as Laufey, as the protagonist while offering a first look at the game's combat, setting and story. In a blog post, Sony and Santa Monica Studio said that additional details about the story, characters and gameplay systems will be shared closer to launch. God of War: Laufey is currently available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store and will launch on PlayStation 5. However, the exact launch date remains unknown. The blog post read: “Coming soon to PlayStation 5!”According to the studio, the title blends elements from the series' Greek-era games with the world-building and character-driven storytelling of the Norse saga, with gameplay centered on Faye's mobility, close-range combat and magical abilities.

God of War Laufey: Faye takes centre stage in a new story

Faye has previously been portrayed as a legendary warrior whose actions shaped the Nine Realms long before meeting Kratos. In this God of War, players will explore Laufey's story directly, including her strengths, flaws, and legacy.The game follows Faye after her death, with the legendary warrior awakening in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen. According to Santa Monica Studio, she discovers that the plans she had put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are under threat, setting her on a journey through the gods' afterlife.

The game introduces the Everywhen, described as a realm beyond the afterlives of mortals where magic originates and returns. During her journey, Faye encounters gods and creatures from multiple mythologies, including Sekhmet and Begtse, as she uncovers mysteries about the nature of the realm and her unexpected return after death.Faye will be joined by two companions. Along the way, she’s assisted by Phranque (voiced by Jack Quaid), a cosmic cube, and Rue (voiced by Perlina Lau), the protector of a mighty sword that plays a key part in Faye’s journey.

Deborah Ann Woll returns as Faye from God of War Ragnarök.Santa Monica Studio said Faye's combat style has been designed around speed, agility and fluid movement between ground and aerial attacks. Players will be able to use a legendary sword obtained early in the story, with combat built around maintaining momentum across encounters.The studio also revealed that Faye's abilities as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar will play a major role in gameplay. Her powers allow her to manipulate souls, including separating an enemy's soul from its body and using it in combat to create additional attack opportunities and combinations.
