Get ready for a blast from the past! The beloved 1987 sci-fi comedy 'Spaceballs' is officially getting a sequel, slated for release on April 23, 2027. Original stars Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis are set to return, joined by newcomers like Josh Gad and Keke Palmer. Director Josh Greenbaum is at the helm for this highly anticipated follow-up.
Last year, many films ended up getting sequels years after their release. Including names like ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and ‘Practical Magic’, ‘Spaceballs’ is another quirky film that is joining the list.
Last year, it was reported that the film would be getting a sequel. Along with this, old cast members would be joining the project, though now there is a whole new update!
‘Spaceballs’ sequel set for 2027 release
Recent Deadline reports confirmed that the much-awaited sequel to the space sci-fi is all set and ready for release next year. The official release date for the film has been set to April 23, 2027, as of right now. Beloved names such as Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga,
Bill Pullman
, and George Wyner will reprise their roles from the first film.
Josh Gad
, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan, on the other hand, will be joining the upcoming sequel as newcomers.As of right now, the plot details for the new film, along with the final title, have not yet been released to the public.
About ‘Spaceballs’
The first original film was released in 1987, and acts as a comic version of the beloved ‘Star Wars’ franchise. The report also shared that at the time of its release, the film fared well at the box office, earning USD 38.1 million. The premise of the film is based on a planet called Spaceball, which has been dealing with air deprivation.
The residents of the planet survive on ‘Perri-air’; however, in a bout to get fresh and clean air, the leader of the planet does something drastic. He gets their planets, villain to kidnap a princess from an air-rich planet and hold her hostage in exchange for air. A crew of misfits, led by Bill Pullman’s character, is sent to rescue the princess before it's too late.Josh Greenbaum is directing the sequel, while Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez wrote the script. Gad also teased the project back in 2024 in a social media post when he talked about handing in the script. His post at the time read, “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on, and I am so freaking excited.”
