Spain has begun sea trials of the S-82 Narciso Monturiol, the second submarine in its indigenous S-80 Plus class, marking a key milestone before it enters service with the Spanish Navy.Built by Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, the S-82 is part of Spain's ambitious plan to replace its ageing Agosta-class submarines with modern, homegrown submarines. According to Naval Today and Baird Maritime, the sea trials will test the submarine's propulsion, diving capability, navigation, sonar, weapons systems and overall safety under real operating conditions before it is commissioned.

Why it matters

The S-82 is more than just another submarine. It represents Spain's push to strengthen its underwater warfare capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign defence technology. The S-80 Plus class is designed to carry out a wide range of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, attacks on enemy ships, intelligence gathering, surveillance, mine-laying and deployment of special forces. One of its biggest strengths is the Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system being developed in Spain. Once integrated, the technology will allow the submarine to remain underwater for much longer without surfacing to recharge its batteries, making it harder to detect during combat missions.

The submarine is around 81 metres long, displaces about 3,000 tonnes when submerged and can carry a crew of around 32 personnel, along with special operations teams. It is armed with heavyweight torpedoes and anti-ship missiles fired through six 533-mm torpedo tubes. The sea trials are also significant because the S-80 Plus programme had faced years of delays due to design issues involving the submarine's weight and buoyancy.

Spain commissioned the first submarine of the class, S-81 Isaac Peral, in 2023 after resolving those problems.According to Naval Today and Baird Maritime, the successful testing of the S-82 is expected to strengthen Spain's domestic defence industry, support its independent submarine-building capability and enhance its contribution to Nato's maritime security operations.
