The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) on Monday announced a special 100-day awareness campaign starting next week to promote the construction of rainwater harvesting (RWH) pits in all houses and residential complexes.

Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy said RWH pits are necessary in houses measuring 200 square yards and is mandatory in houses measuring 300 square yards and above.

Addressing officials and residents in Madhapur on Monday, he said that despite receiving substantial rainfall annually; only a small fraction currently recharges the aquifers. The campaign aims to educate the public about the necessity of capturing rainwater and directing it into the ground through RWH pits.

The Board’s earlier surveys identified thousands of residential complexes without RWH pits. The special campaign will also specifically promote community RWH systems in gated communities and convert unused borewells into injection wells.

Mr. Reddy urged residents to participate actively in the campaign and said widespread adoption of RWH pits could reduce reliance on tanker water supply and future large-scale drinking water schemes, ensuring sustainable water availability for all.
